The Cat Came Back

by Thomas Burns Scully

about

My cover of the old blues/jazz standard 'The Cat Came Back'. It's a song my mother loves, and I do too, so I recorded it, and here it is.

lyrics

Old Mr. Johnson had problems all his own
An evil yellow cat wouldn't leave his home
He tried and he tried to give the cat away
Gave it to a man going far far away

CHORUS:
But the cat came back
The very next day
The cat came back
They thought she was a goner
The cat came back
She just couldn't stay away

Man around the corner swore he'd shoot the cat on sight
Loaded up a shotgun with nails and dynamite
Waited and he waited for the cat to come around
Ninety-seven pieces of the man was all they found

CHORUS

Gave it to a man on a train heading west
Told him for to take it to the one he loved the best
First his train hit the kerb, then it jumped the rails
Not a soul was left, to tell the gruesome tale

CHORUS

Gave it one day, to a man in a balloon
Said "Hey man, take him to the man in the moon"
But the ballon, it burst, or so everybody said
Seven miles out of town, the man was found dead

CHORUS

On a telegraph wire sparrows sitting in a bunch
Cat's creeping up, thought she'd eat em all for lunch
Climbed softly up the pole, when she reached the top
She put a foot on an electric wire, she got a shock

CHORUS

Give it to the small boy with a dollar note
Take him on the river in your little red boat
Tied a rock around her neck, it weighed about a pound
Now they're searching the river for the boy who drowned

CHORUS

(And the cat said, let's do a tempo change)

The cat was a'sleeping, resting one day
Then came an organ grinder round and he began to play
The looked around a'while, turned her head
He played 'Ta-ra-ra-boom-dee-ay'
And the cat dropped dead

But it's ghost came back
To tell you all about it
It's ghost came back
Between you and I
It's ghost came back
Though maybe you would doubt it
The cat came back
Just to say goodbye
