Rocket Ship

about

A song that was brewing for quite sometime. The riff, loosely inspired by 'Telstar' and 70s Bowie has been in my head for about two years. Originally called 'Ordinary Man', I wasn't happy with any of the lyrics I'd written. Then, at the start of the Autumn, I had a dream where I was showing friends an album cover with a VW camper set against a twilight sky. On the album it said 'Rocket Ship'. That day on the subway, I wrote the song.

lyrics

Look down,
At the streets that were your home,
At the house,
Where you dreamed your dreams alone,
At the bed,
Where you practised your guitar,
Never knowing,
Just how far you would go,
And I don't know,
What's coming next for you,

The shuttle you built,
On broken ground,
With Lego bricks lost in places,
No one ever found,
Bad dreams and purple stuff,
A cupboard full of figurines,
It was never enough,
Late night static,
On the radio,
Getting up early for video games,
You don't know,
Where it's going to take you, you know,
Cause when worlds blowing up,
You got to give it the slip,
Know what to do,
You build a rocket ship,

And when you're flying high,
A million miles from the sky,
Saying hi,
To Major Tom,
And everybody on the ground,
Has gathered around,
Shouting at you to come home,
There ain't but one thing to do,
With you and your rocket ship crew,
Rocket ship crew of one,
And that's to take another ride,
On the Saturniun side,
Cause there ain't no way,
You can ever go home,
No way you can ever go home,

Oh no, I'm having too much fun,

In my solar powered
Faster than light
Burning its way through the night
One thing I ever got right
Thing that makes me cooler than hip
Space's greatest quantum trip
I'm Right out of a comic strip
I got a rocket ship

Then maybe some day,
Nine billion light years away,
You'll look back,
On where you are from
Dust and the sand,
All the cuts on your hands,
And all the things,
That taught you to love,
When you're flying up there,
In the tangerine air,
Black hole in the rear view screen,
You'll look round and stare,
Solar wind in your hair,
And you still don't know,
What none of it means,

As you fly in your, in your
Rocket ship
